We’re pleased to have been involved in another regeneration project that has helped revitalise a run-down part of a major UK town. The City Vizion project in Newport, South Wales is a multi-million pound landmark development that has transformed the former docks on the east bank of the river Usk into a highly desirable and attractive residential and commercial area.
The residential site comprises a collection of 3 – 4 bedroom homes along with a number of 5 storey apartments. The 2- bedroom apartments, built by UK builders Taylor Wimpey, are all located around a stylish waterfront complex complete with riverside walk and boating jetty.
In addition to the stunning location, within a few minutes’ walk of the heart of the City, the apartments include innovative features such as a solar thermal hot water system and stylish internal décor of the common areas.
At the development stage, we were delighted to be asked by sub-contractor WK Plasterers, part of Kathrens Holdings Group, if we were able to supply a maintenance free, hard wearing brick cladding to the apartment block stairwell.
With heavy regular footfall in all common areas, one of the problems with regular plastered walls is that they get chipped and easily marked. They also require regular maintenance and painting. Our solution was to propose using our GRP brick effect cladding with a red rustic finish.
In addition to being a maintenance free, hard wearing solution, the panels are easier and quicker to install than using traditional brick slips. We supplied made to measure panels – manufactured off site – that were then installed on site by WK’s own team of fitters.
According to WK, the cost and time savings, by using our Brick effect cladding, were substantial compared to traditional construction methods. This also enabled the developers to accommodate tenants much sooner than usual, thereby, helping to quickly create a vibrant community spirt.
The City Vizion development is an integral part of a £500m scheme to revitalise the historic town of Newport, hit hard by the gradual decline of the docks over the past 50 years and the recent mothballing of the local steelworks. Plans also include the refurbishment of the Kingsway Shopping Centre and further development of the renowned Riverside Arts centre with its array of cafes, bars and Victorian market.
